François Morellet: Light Blue

Since 1953, François Morellet has concerned himself with the concept of pictorial space as a structure which tends to be unending and which exceeds the boundaries of the picture. Artistic imagination in the traditional sense is, however, ruled out, since Morellet first lays down the rules of play and systems, which can lead to different coincidental results in the finished works.

Kinetics and Space
IIn the sixties, Morellet further developed the possibilities of coincidental systems, including kinetic moments and, from 1963, neon as a material in his work. In the seventies he confronted the issue of the relationship between the pictorial figure, bearer and the space around it by dividing these up and transplanting them to an unstable position.
Architectonic Disintegrations
His first commissions for public works allowed him to realize his investigations, which he called "architectonic disintegrations", in public buildings and find larger connections. There is often a self-willed geometry which penetrates the structural texture of his work and anarchically and playfully infiltrates its visibly domineering character.
The Meaning behind the Methods

It can be said of all Morellet's work that the method interests him more than the pictorial end result. However, he is very careful to ensure that the latter is perceived both as aesthetically pleasing and as visually attractive by the beholder.
